History of the eastern youth orchestra
Tuesday, 28 February 2012 22:59 | Author: Kelly Davis |
Established in 1980 as a community orchestra, the Eastern Youth Orchestra (EYO) developed into an orchestra for advanced high school musicians. Its senior level, now known as the Eastern Senior Youth Orchestra (ESYO), was conducted for many years by faculty members from the East Carolina University School of Music. The ESYO is now under the direction of conductor Dr. John O'Brien. To encourage and accommodate students from middle school, the Eastern Junior Youth Orchestra (EJYO) was formed in 2003 with the help of its current director Dr. Gregory Hurley. EYO continued its growth in 2005 with the creation of the Eastern Preperatory Youth Orchestra (EPYO) and is under the nurturing direction of Wendy Bissinger. The EYO has been a springboard for many young musicians, and has several hundred alumni now teaching and performing music.

The EYO Chamber Music Program is a 4-week program designed for musically advanced students of any age to focus intensively on a chamber work.
